My life changed dramatically last February. I had one tonic clonic seizure…

And that was the start of months of tonic clonic seizures along with hallucinations that I had been experiencing since I was 4 years old. I’m 28 years of age, I have two young, active and beautiful children, but epilepsy has left me in a state that where I was not able to care for my children.

Can you imagine what that would be like?

As a mother not being able to properly take care of her own children?

Unfortunately, this led to my kids staying at my parents’ place or staying with their dad for long periods of time. They didn’t see or communicate with me much because of the number of seizures I was having and the state they left me in. This hurt my kids and myself deeply. To be torn away from your children because of epilepsy.

Thankfully, and with the support of my family and the Epilepsy Foundation, I’ve adapted to my seizures and accept they are a part of me. This has allowed me to open up to my kids and try to explain what I’m going through. They know I’m not well but they’re too young to understand.

The Epilepsy Foundation has been wonderful to me. They have helped me understand my epilepsy better. They have supported me, providing me with the support, information, care and understanding I need. They are honest with me. And they are always available for me.
