I’m taking part in Walk for Epilepsy around Australia because...
Ava is 14 and has had focal epilepsy for five years now, which means different types of seizures can arise from one small area of her brain. Her type of focal epilepsy has been very hard to manage with medication and she’s tried lots of different ones that aren’t really working very well, so she is now on the long pathway of testing to see if it is safe enough for surgeons to remove that trouble area in the brain (the long journey made much longer due to the pandemic restrictions on some services).
Epilepsy impacts different people in different ways, and even though Ava doesn’t have generalised ‘tonic clonic’ seizures, she has other types that can leave her feeling exhausted and sick quite often. Plus side effects of lots of medication can also be hard to deal with. Despite all of this, Ava has amazing positivity and gives everything a go in life!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a cure for epilepsy! To not have to worry about seizures and she can enjoy each day to the full is something we are all hoping for and whether that is with surgery or other new advances in scientific research that can provide hope - this can only happen with more awareness and funding.
Please join our team that is behind Ava and show her and everyone else living with epilepsy that they don’t have to walk alone!
