Moving Through Life With Marvellous Miles: A Storytelling Afternoon with Sarah Watts
Thursday 12th MarThis March, Make March Purple returns to Dickson, bringing the community together to raise awareness and support for people living with epilepsy.
On Sunday 29 March, The Tradies Canberra will host a family-friendly community event at Poppyfield Commons (the former Dickson Garden Centre site), and we’re delighted to once again welcome local author Sarah Watts for a special reading of her children’s book, Marvellous Miles.
The event forms part of Make March Purple, an annual campaign that raises awareness and funds to support people living with epilepsy across Australia.
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects people of all ages and is part of daily life for many children and families. While more common than many people realise, it is still widely misunderstood. Events like this help create opportunities for open conversation, understanding and connection within our community.
At the heart of Marvellous Miles is a spirited young lion who loves to move and groove his way through the day. But when his body begins to move in ways he doesn’t expect, Miles sets out to understand what is happening. The story gently explores resilience, curiosity and learning in a way that helps children better understand epilepsy.
The book was inspired by Sarah’s own son, who was diagnosed with epilepsy as a toddler. Drawing on her lived experience, Sarah has created a story that helps families, schools and communities talk more openly about epilepsy and the experiences of children living with the condition.
Sarah hopes Marvellous Miles can help start those conversations — between parents and children, between classmates and friends, and across communities.
The storytelling session will be part of a relaxed family afternoon at Poppyfield Commons, with activities for children and families, community connection and opportunities to learn more about epilepsy awareness.
The event will run from 11:00am to 2:00pm and will also feature the Purple Muck Challenge, a fun fundraising activity where participants raise funds for epilepsy awareness before taking on the challenge.
We’re proud to host this event in Dickson and to work alongside Epilepsy ACT to help create spaces where people feel supported, informed and connected.
If you’re looking for a relaxed family outing while supporting an important cause, we’d love to see you at Poppyfield Commons on Sunday 29 March.
